Gutter Guard Factors to Consider

Gutter guards let rainwater flow into the gutter while preventing leaves and other debris from entering the channel. When shopping for gutter guards, go for the type that can be installed on the edges of the roof as it is safer and more economical. There are several gutter protection systems to choose from. Knowing how to compare them will help you select the most suitable one for your home.

Look at the way each gutter guard system works when comparing them. The classic screens with mesh top panels keep most organic matter out while maintaining relatively good rainwater flow rates. Foam types are placed inside the gutter to protect it from all sorts of debris including dust mites, pollen, and sand particles; however, their water flow rates might be lower.

You should also consider the installation process. Screen models with clips are simple to install and relatively stable. Those with brackets are the most stable of all, but you’ll need screws and brackets for the best possible stability. Foam guards are the easiest to set up; you just need to place each piece in the gutter. These types need to be cleaned more often, though.

The durability of a gutter guard is determined by the material it’s made of. While foam is unlikely to get damaged by outside weather conditions, it’s possible for mold to grow on it if the weather is warm and humid. Plastic is typically flexible and able to withstand pressure from snow, but harmful UV rays may cause it to wear out more quickly. Galvanized steel has a tendency to rust, unlike aluminum and stainless steel.

Thickness of the panels should be taken into account as well if you’re thinking of purchasing a plastic or metal gutter protection system. In general, thicker bars or mesh mean a more durable structure. But you have to make sure that your gutters are sturdy and properly installed so they do not give out under the heavier and thicker guards. Also, bulkier designs are more expensive than lighter ones, especially the aluminum types.
